Ritmo Della Terra (Italian for Rhythm of the Land) is truly a higher-faster-louder work for concert band. The genesis of this project began in the fall of 2004 when I began sketching out melodies for an original halftime show for marching band. After everything was developed and orchestrated, I began to look at the finished project and imagined the potential for a tremendous concert band work full of energy and life. With that in mind, I added the mysterious introduction, greatly expanded slow middle section and shifted the percussion section from a marching section to a concert section. The end result is this 8 1/2 minute tour-de-force composition for concert band. Although a wind ensemble could perform this effectively, the ideal medium for this work would be the large (80+) symphonic band setting.
